Dr. Michiaki Takahashi was a Japanese virologist and he is best known for inventing the 1st chickenpox vaccine. Dr. Michiaki Takahashi developed the “Oka” vaccine by producing v-Oka, a live-attenuated virus strain of varicella zoster virus.

Dr. Michiaki Takahashi was born on 17^th Feb 1928 at Higashisumiyoshi-ku, Osaka, Japan. Dr. Michiaki Takahashi join Osaka University’s Research Institute for Microbial Disease in 1959 and studied polioviruses and measles. In 1963 Dr. Michiaki Takahashi shifted to United States complete a research fellowship at Baylor College. Dr. Michiaki Takahashi’s son contracted chickenpox when he was away from his family and then Dr. Michiaki Takahashi decided to fight against the disease.

In 1965 Dr. Michiaki Takahashi returned to Japan and started research on chickenpox viruses. In 1974 Dr. Michiaki Takahashi developed 1^st vaccine to fight against the varicella virus, which causes chickenpox and that vaccine showed very good results to treat people suffering from chickenpox.

In 1986, World Health Organization authorized this vaccine and then Research Foundation for Microbial Diseases began distributing the vaccine.

At that time Dr. Michiaki Takahashi’s vaccine was used in more than 80 countries and given to millions of children.

In 1994 Dr. Michiaki Takahashi was named director of Osaka University’s Microbial Disease Study Group.

On 16^th Dec. 2013 legend Dr. Michiaki Takahashi died due to heart failure.

In 1997 Dr. Michiaki Takahashi was awarded with VZVRF’s third Scientific Achievement Award
